Join the Department of Health as Washington’s WIC Nutrition Coordinator,

leading statewide efforts to improve nutrition, breastfeeding support, and participant services for families through the WIC program. In this key leadership role, you’ll guide policy, training, and operations for the Client and Nutrition Services Section, ensuring high-quality, equitable WIC services reach communities across the state.

About the Role

The WIC Nutrition Coordinator manages the Client and Nutrition Services Section, composed of three teams that support the statewide delivery of WIC services. You’ll provide strategic leadership and direction for nutrition and certification policy, WIC program training, and participant services.

Key responsibilities include:

Overseeing the development of policies and training to help local WIC agencies meet federal and state requirements.

Promoting best practices in participant evaluation, referrals, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support.

Maintaining strong communication and collaboration with contracted local WIC agencies.

Monitoring participation trends and guiding caseload and funding allocations.

Coordinating outreach to expand WIC access in areas of greatest need.

Ensuring WIC foods and formulas meet all regulatory standards.

Partnering with internal teams and external organizations to strengthen nutrition services and access.

As part of the ONS leadership team, you’ll also help plan and manage an annual budget of $170 million, oversee section performance, and guide supervisors and staff toward achieving the mission of improving nutrition and health for Washington families.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the development of policies and training to help local WIC agencies meet federal and state requirements.
  • Promoting best practices in participant evaluation, referrals, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support.
  • Maintaining strong communication and collaboration with contracted local WIC agencies.
  • Monitoring participation trends and guiding caseload and funding allocations.
  • Coordinating outreach to expand WIC access in areas of greatest need.
  • Ensuring WIC foods and formulas meet all regulatory standards.
  • Partnering with internal teams and external organizations to strengthen nutrition services and access.

Requirements

  • Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities.
  • Holds a Master's or Doctoral degree in the field of nutrition from an accredited college or university with emphasis in food and nutrition, community nutrition, public health nutrition, nutrition education, human nutrition, nutrition science or equivalent AND has at least two years of experience as a nutritionist in education, social service, maternal and child health, public health, nutrition or dietetics AND three years of Supervisory or Leadership experience.
  • Holds credentials of a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) or is eligible for registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Commission on Dietetic Registration, and if applicable, holds a State license or is certified as a nutritionist/dietitian, AND has a minimum of 2 years of job-related experience, AND three years of supervisory or Leadership Experience.
  • Holds a bachelor’s degree in the field of nutrition from an accredited college or university and has 6 years of experience as a nutritionist in education, social service, maternal and child health, public health nutrition, or dietetics-related experience, AND three years of Supervisory or Leadership experience.
