Recreation & Athletic Specialist 4 Clallam Bay Corrections Center (CBCC) Full-time - Permanent The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the Recreation & Athletic Specialist 4 position at Clallam Bay Corrections Center. Clallam Bay Corrections Center is a 900-bed male correctional facility located on the point of the Olympic Peninsula.  It is 50 miles west of Port Angeles and looks out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Vancouver Island.  This facility houses medium and close custody incarcerated individuals.  CBCC also operates a Restricted Housing Unit. Whether the work is inside a prison, in community corrections, or in an administrative office, the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all incarcerated individuals can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the institution’s recreation program to include the intramural sports leagues, weightlifting programs, fitness activities, hobby, music, photo, club activities, arts and crafts, social activities, and supervision of incarcerated work crews.
  • Coordinates the availability of these program services appropriately in the gymnasium, outside yards, visiting rooms, and living units.
  • Solicits feedback from staff and individuals about the current program.
  • Reviews and provides input about program ideas that are presented by administrative staff and individuals.
  • Develops a budget for equipment, supplies, and facilities.
  • Provide a weekly recreation schedule for all units to attend.
  • Establishes and prioritizes performance expectations for staff.
  • Conducts timely performance evaluations as required and provides ongoing directions, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Effectively addresses employee performance and misconduct issues and takes appropriate actions.
  • Assesses staff individually for career development and provides training experiences.
  • Provides guidance and counseling to individuals with regards to recreation programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains liaisons with community representatives and organizations which may benefit the recreation program.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • 2 years' experience in program management in recreational or intramural sports programs.
  • A bachelor’s degree involving major study in either (a) recreation or therapeutic recreation; (b) music, drama, or physical education, or (c) psychology, sociology, or education with a minor in recreation, physical education, music, or drama and three years of professional experience, including one year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Three years of experience as a Recreation & Athletics Specialist, which includes one year as a Recreational Specialist 3.
