About the role

The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the non-permanent position of Corrections Specialist 2 at Clallam Bay Corrections Center.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert level consultation, advice, guidance and support to managers, supervisors, and employees regarding multiple, complex security management related issues and processes.
  • Work with the facility Chief of Security to develop and implement targeted interventions based on information collected through logs, staff reports, observations, and other materials.
  • Create measurable, outcome-based goals to strengthen the safety and security of employees.
  • Test security related processes and procedures, provide recommendations for improvement needed to ensure integrity of facility security.
  • Lead role on the Local Security Advisory Committee (LSAC).
  • Chairs the LSAC and represents the Chief of Security priorities and agenda when she/he is not able to attend.
  • Communicate in-person with employees who submit security concerns, provide timely periodic updates of progress made in regard to status of implementing the improvement or suggestion.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and test the facility Staff Accountability process.
  • Establish, conduct, and document random checks for accountability of all single person posts to include custody, non-custody, contract staff, and volunteers.
  • Monitor, track and analyze duress alarm activations and responses.
  • Conduct quarterly tests of radio alias information by verifying unique identifier from facility base station.
  • Conduct monthly drills to test staff response to panic buttons, duress alarms, personal body alarms and keying of a radio with no audible message.
  • Provide guidance, resources, and instruction, for all staff pertaining to proper use and handling of personal portable facility radios, panic buttons, area duress alarms, and personal body alarms where applicable.
  • Coordinate track and respond to Place Safety Muster related topics.
  • Ensure compliance with internal and external audit requirements regarding Place Safety Muster.
  • Create and publish Place Safety Muster schedules for the Chief of Security, quarterly.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, AND Four (4) years of correctional and/or security experience in adult corrections, juvenile, law enforcement or related field.
  • Formal education in Criminal Justice or closely allied field from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S Department of Education and the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • Demonstrated competency in the following areas: Demonstrated skills to write clearly, factually, and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to recall detailed instructions, maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communications skills in routine and emergency situations.
  • Observation - Observe and strategize personal action, based on environmental conditions and human behavior.
  • Technology- Learn and utilize computer-based applications in the performance of job duties.
  • Stress Tolerance - Remains calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations.
  • Professional Standards - Know and apply Corrections related law, policy, procedure, and practice.
  • Adhere to productivity standards and timelines established by law and policy.
  • Adaptability - Incorporate new information into an existing framework of understanding.
  • Consulting: Provides advice on situations requiring immediate attention; exercises knowledge of Security Management issues, leadership principles, and organizational behavior; exercises conflict resolution, proactive intervention, group facilitation, and contract and negotiation skills.
  • Analysis and Problem Solving: Facilitates the problem-solving process; anticipates problems; acts as a mediator, facilitating effective outcomes for all parties; influences new ways of thinking; understands work group concerns and problems; develops statistical or other data.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Interaction: Uses independent judgment during challenges.
  • Customer Focus and Business Orientation: Understands customers' organization and mission and provides proactive guidance.
  • Change Leadership: Assesses problems and proposes actions and resources needed to accomplish changes.
  • Teamwork: Develops and leads or coaches teams using appropriate process planning to achieve goal.
  • Research and Analysis: Researches and verifies information; identifies the type of information needed and where to obtain it; applies analytical skills to data and formulates a determination and recommendations.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Outlook.
