About the role

The Classification Counselor 2 provides professional classification guidance with the goal of placing incarcerated individuals (I/I) in the least restrictive custody designation, while meeting the need to provide for the safety of the public, staff, visitors, and incarcerated individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of adult incarcerated individuals.
  • Investigate all information available for each arriving individual and determine the individual’s documentation and programming needs.
  • Collect information to complete facility plans, criminal history and risk management tools to determine needs.
  • Administer Risk Assessment Tools.
  • Prepare and submit Offender Release Plan.
  • Counsel and inform individuals regarding community resources and problems they might encounter in their DOC 03-446 (Rev. 10/31/22) Page 2 of 6 DOC 820.200 transition to work release, GRE, or release.
  • Work with internal and external entities such as Reentry Navigators, iCoach Specialists and Community Corrections staff to facilitate individuals’ reentry into the Community.
  • Enforce court ordered conditions and imposed DOC conditions.
  • Participate in Risk Management/multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Maintain communication with incarcerated individuals to assist with attorney calls, facilitate court and DSHS virtual hearings and attorney/child custody support calls, and family contact through crisis/emergency situations.
  • Arrange translator services.
  • Regularly review and update incarcerated individuals plans and programming needs.
  • Prepare Mutual Re-Entry Plans and coordinate with other facilities for acceptance.
  • Monitor incarcerated individual programming and behaviors.
  • Exercise sound judgment, aligned with Department policy, in decisions concerning sanctions, treatment, and education referral.
  • Provide effective communication and documentation.
  • Write correspondence, infractions, and incident reports.
  • Provide clear, concise, and consistent communication with staff, incarcerated individuals, and stakeholders through available resources.
  • Complete paperwork for special visits, death bed visits, funeral outings, job referrals, End of Sentence Review packets, Extended Family Visits, marriages, psychological evaluation requests, I/I to I/I correspondence, and out of state and international transfers.
  • Provide monthly report information.
  • Participate in meetings.
  • Testify before courts, boards, and classification or disciplinary hearings.
  • Navigate and maintain multiple electronic technologies and some hard copy files.
  • Record, access, update, and retrieve incarcerated individual-related information from agency database.
  • Maintain electronic and hard copy incarcerated individual file to accurately reflect current incarcerated individual status.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
  • Work with unit staff, as well as with other sections of the facility, to resolve incarcerated individual problems.
  • If required, conduct/facilitate training.
  • Conduct audits.
  • In an emergent situation, transport incarcerated individuals and perform searches and other security functions.
  • Communicate security concerns to supervisor and other staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and one year of social service or corrections experience.
  • A Master’s degree in sociology, psychology, social work, criminology, or closely related field will substitute for the year of required experience.
  • OR Satisfactory completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) and three years of experience in adult corrections, juvenile corrections, rehabilitation or social casework.
  • OR One year as a Classification Counselor 1 in Washington State service to include, at a minimum, satisfactory completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits).
  • OR High School Diploma or Equivalent, AND Five (5) years of experience in adult corrections, juvenile corrections, rehabilitation or social casework.
