About the role
The Reentry Division within the Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill a full time, permanent Corrections and Custody Officer 3 position at Eleanor Chase House Reentry Center in Spokane, Washington
Responsibilities
- Supervise Corrections and Custody Officers (COs)
- Plan, assign, and review the work of staff
- Provide on-the-job training and monitor completion of the on-the-job training requirements of in-training Corrections and Custody Officers
- Evaluate employee performance and prepare performance appraisals
- Resolve staff issues
- Ensure the security of the facility and control movement into, out of, and within the facility
- Provide staff with the tools and skills needed to perform duties in a safe and secure manner
- Monitor resident activities and movement
- Oversee the operation of gates, cameras, turnstiles, sally ports and other movement control systems
- Read, understand, and follow Post Orders/Operational Memorandums
- Review regularly with staff and monitor compliance
- Ensure formal and informal counts
- Operate communication devices such as two-way radio convey information among staff
- Maintain proper use, control, and accountability of keys, tools, and equipment
- Apply appropriate, constructive, and professional authority working with a diverse population of residents
- Strictly adhere to established staff safety practices
- Cultivate a culture of safety and accountability within work unit
- Conducting tabletop safety exercises during all-staff meetings on a quarterly basis
- Advise residents concerning rules, regulations, procedures, facility programs, policies, and behavior standards
- Effectively communicate with residents, staff and visitors in routine and emergent situations and use appropriate de-escalation skills
- Utilize electronic security devices, such as radios and body alarms as appropriate and as necessary to mitigate the risk of danger or harm to self or others
- Direct resistive and non-resistive residents to maintain the orderly operation of the facility
- Use of physical and/or deadly force for protection
- Assist in providing on-the-job training and monitoring completion of the on-the-job training requirements
- Participate in orientation for Reentry Center residents
- Ensure searches and inspections are carried out
- Direct or conduct inspections and searches of residents, residents’ property, residents’ living and program areas and other areas of the facility
- Direct or conduct inspections and searches of staff and visitors, including personal belongings and vehicles
- Seize or direct seizure of dangerous items, evidence, contraband, and controlled or unauthorized substances
- Brief appropriate staff on pertinent information
- Recall detailed observations and write reports
- Write incident or disciplinary reports
- Direct COs in the preparation of infractions, logs, and other reports and review for accuracy and completeness
- Monitor daily activity logs for accuracy, completeness and timeliness
- Assist in preparation for facility audits, i.e. PREA, DOH, and DOC internal audits
- Prepare and submit monthly facility reports to Reentry Center Manager
- Conduct minor infraction review and hearings
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years' experience as a correctional officer in adult corrections
- Two (2) years’ experience as a correctional officer in adult corrections and successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of accredited college-level course work
