Responsibilities
- Lead highway maintenance crews in planning, scheduling, budgeting, coordinating manpower and equipment, training personnel, maintaining records, and occasionally supervise a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor.
- Arrange for the purchase, repair, or replacement of parts and equipment, and assist in investigating employee injuries and equipment damage.
- Perform highway maintenance operations, including pavement repair, drainage and erosion control, sign, guardrail, and fence repair, vegetation management, danger tree removal, landscaping, hauling materials, and litter removal.
- Lead and perform snow and ice control, including applying anti-icing compounds, loading trucks, pulling spreader boxes, hauling materials, and maintaining stockpile sites.
- Operate Class A, B, and C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.
- Maintain and repair equipment and hand tools, clean crew rooms, storage areas, truck bays, stockpile sites, and other WSDOT facilities.
- Act as traffic control lead and first responder on emergency operations, including assisting the crew with traffic control setup and coordinating with external agencies.
- Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings, including coordinating with law enforcement and safely handling hazardous substances.
Requirements
- Highway Maintenance
- Applied knowledge of highway maintenance practices including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installations, and debris removal.
- Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
- Licensing & Certifications
- Possession of a Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
- Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License (required within twelve months of hire).
- Equipment Operation
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining a variety of Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles in accordance with WSDOT standards.
- Demonstrated ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.
- Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
- Safety Awareness & Compliance
- Strong Understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
- Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
- Traffic Control & Work Zones
- Working knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and use of cones/barrels.
- Ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within 6 months of hire.
- Technical & Administrative Proficiency
- Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS).
- Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication.

- Ability to lead and/or supervise crews, providing clear direction and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.

- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/standby.
- Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call or be willing to relocate to meet the required response time.
- Ability and willingness to work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, as well as traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
