Organic Certification Reviewer

The Organic Certification Reviewer works independently to analyze organic systems for compliance with regulatory requirements. This position interprets complex certification applications for technical accuracy, reviews inspection reports using scientific knowledge, federal regulations and USDA policies and makes independent decisions regarding the merit of the findings in reports.

• Use scientific knowledge and interpretation of regulatory standards and policies when performing complex evaluations of organic systems through onsite observations, records review, and sample collection.
• Analyze evidence and make independent determination on whether a violation has occurred. Identify improvement areas during onsite evaluations.
• Make independent decisions and solves problems which emerge in the review and investigation process.
• Write clear and concise reviews that outline issues, requirements, and action needed to correct any potential or identified compliance violations.
• Ensure transparency in review work and decisions. Maintain documentation following records retention policies.
• Provide stakeholders with high level of technical assistance verbally and in writing to help them understand and achieve compliance with rules, regulations, and law.
• Research and investigate agricultural production or handling issues which may include input material use, production practices, harvest, and post-harvest processes to ensure accurate and consistent interpretation of organic regulations.
• Guide the development of policies and procedures around the specialty area.
• Assist leadership team by making recommendations regarding application forms and guidance documents, inspection reports, and certification policies and procedures specific to the specialty area.
• Develop and/or implement project plans and conducts research for technical projects; work both independently and in a small team environment as it relates to the specialty area.

• A Bachelor's degree involving major study in agriculture, horticulture, or other allied natural science or environmental field
• Two (2) years of professional-level experience in commercial food production or handling or environmental related inspections/regulatory work
• Master's degree in one of the above fields will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience
• Ph.D. in one of the above fields
• One (1) year of experience as an Environmental Specialist 2
