About the role
The Laboratory Assistant III performs various laboratory support procedures in assigned areas, which may include phlebotomy and/or specimen processing in clinical and anatomical pathology areas. This role is integral to processing all types of lab specimens, including microbiology and histology. The Laboratory Assistant III must meet the required basic continuing education and department-specific requirements. Work customarily involves practical knowledge in various laboratory procedures and support functions, requiring advanced problem-solving skills. Active participation in Laboratory, Campus, or Community programs is required. Additionally, this role entails equipment preventative maintenance as needed and may involve staffing the emergency department as necessary. The Laboratory Assistant III assists in ensuring the daily activities of the Lab Processing Area meet the needs of the entire hospital and acts as the primary provider of orientation and training for newly hired Laboratory Assistants. This position may also serve as the "In Charge" person over the Specimen Processing Area during times when the Processing Supervisor is not available, playing a crucial role in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all and actively participating in outstanding customer service.
The value you'll bring to the team: May perform blood specimen collection, including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups. Loads preanalytical instruments or delivers specimens to the testing department. May perform cytopreparatory staining and accessions surgical cases with knowledge of anatomy. May receive and set up primary specimen cultures, inoculating petri dishes for bacterial growth. May perform periodic preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures. Performs various support activities to facilitate operation of assigned department or work area, which may include answering the telephone, clerical and receptionist duties. May perform point of care testing, and associated, quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation and result reporting.
