About the role
As a Remote Sign Language Interpreter, you will facilitate communication between Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals and hearing individuals in a school-based setting via video remote interpreting (VRI).
Responsibilities
- Provide real-time American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation via video conferencing platforms
- Interpret accurately and impartially between spoken English and ASL
- Adapt communication style to meet the needs of each client or setting
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards
- Collaborate with clients and other professionals to ensure effective communication
- Manage scheduling, documentation, and session reports as needed
- Stay current with interpreting best practices and participate in professional development
Requirements
- Fluency in American Sign Language and spoken English
- RID certification (NIC, CI/CT, or equivalent) or BEI certification
- Registered and/or licensed to provide interpreting services in the state of Michigan (or eligible)
- At least 2 years of interpreting experience (remote or on-site)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Access to a professional home setup including high-speed internet connection, neutral background, good lighting, and quality webcam/microphone
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and the diverse needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community
