Commercial Lines Underwriter - Ocean Marine

The Middle Market segment within our Business Insurance group at Travelers underwrites and markets a diverse portfolio of risks covering a specialized product range to meet the needs of mid-sized businesses

• Responsible for the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business
• Underwrite and skillfully negotiate customer accounts to minimize risk and maximize profitability
• Develop and maintain relationships with internal partners within the business unit and across the enterprise
• Identify and capture new business opportunities using consultative marketing and sales skills
• Effectively develop and execute sales plans to ensure retention and new business targets are met

• Bachelor’s degree
• Three to five years of relevant insurance or underwriting experience
• Knowledge of property/casualty insurance products, the regulatory environment, and the local insurance market
• Relevant experience interacting with brokers
• Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or other insurance-related designation
• Strong financial acumen, including the ability to analyze financial statements and client’s loss history
• Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to proactively identify underwriting, marketing or financial challenges and analyze available information to make timely decisions in alignment with our risk appetite
• Communication skills, with the ability to successfully negotiate with brokers
