About the role

Benefits, Questions, Description, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, Job Title: Parks Interpretive Specialist 1, Location: Goldendale, WA, Closes: This position will close on October 6th, 2025, at 5 p.m. PST. A first review of applications will be completed on September 22nd, 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Assists supervisor with the day-to-day operations and management of Goldendale Observatory State Park.
  • Educates Park visitors on services, rules, and regulations governing activities within the park, including Discover Pass requirements.
  • Responsible for the majority of face-to-face, telephone, and written correspondence with the general public.
  • Maintains financial records and operational reports required for fiscal compliance and business practice reviews.
  • Maintains and archives daily visitation and event logs.
  • Participates in activities to recruit, schedule, train, and oversee volunteers involved in interpretive or special event activities.
  • May participate in or delegates indoor/outdoor grounds and maintenance work.
  • Uses and maintains equipment associated with interpretation at the facility to include telescopes, cameras, computers, and audio-visual equipment.
  • Independently operates Park vehicles to carry out job duties.
  • Develops and delivers formal interpretive presentations for park visitors and school groups; conducts technical research in the production of thematic educational programs.
  • Promotes interpretive services and special events within the Park area.
  • Administrates education partnership programs with school districts and colleges.
  • Provides technical or subject matter expertise on interpretive exhibits, equipment, media publications, brochures, signage, and other educational materials, as directed.
  • Assists in the inspection of new and revised interpretive products to ensure compliance with expectations.
  • Assists in curations by ensuring classification and protection of archival materials for use in interpretive programming and exhibits.
  • Conducts technical research in the production of thematic educational programs.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years' experience in physical science research or interpretation and one (1) year experience providing interpretive programs, demonstrations on historical or science-based subjects in a public setting, or experience in the performing arts.
  • Associate's degree involving major study in interpretation physics, astronomy, engineering, physical sciences, or allied field and one (1) year experience providing interpretive programs, demonstrations on historical or science-based subjects in a public setting, or experience in the performing arts.
