About the role

Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system. The Senior Plastics Engineer is responsible for injection mold life cycle management and ongoing support of injection molded components that are used in Abbott Vascular products.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

  • Responsible for injection mold life cycle management and ongoing support of injection molded components.
  • Serving as both a technical SME for injection molding as well as a project manager for molding projects.
  • Engaging in tactical and strategic activities to support ongoing business objectives.
  • Troubleshooting molding and tooling issues in conjunction with supplier and lead/support internal investigations as needed to resolve.
  • Working closely with molding suppliers to ensure reliable supply of parts.
  • Performing capacity analysis for injection molds and press-side automation and making recommendations for future investment.
  • Concurrent management of multiple projects.
  • Development of cost estimates for capital and expense projects.
  • Creating and maintaining project schedules; overseeing cross-functional team activities to achieve program objectives.
  • Transferring molds to new suppliers; validating injection mold tooling and process at new suppliers.
  • Regularly interacting with molding suppliers to meet quality and cost objectives.
  • Participating on cross-functional teams to investigate and resolve molding issues.
  • Identifying and evaluating potential cost improvement projects through up-cavitation of new molds, press-side automation to reduce labor, combining parts with insert/over molding/two shot molding and resin changes.
  • Writing specifications; designing verification/validation protocols and reporting.
  • Capacity analysis and long-range planning activities to ensure continuity of supply.
  • Using FMEA and SPC to ensure reliable molding processes are in place.

Requirements

  • Bachelors' Degree (Engineering or technical discipline desired) Required; or equivalent experience plus demonstrated competence.
  • 10+ years technical work experience with 5+ years of plastic injection molding, process engineering support and/or tooling experience, preferably in the medical device industry.
  • Knowledge of plastics processes, resins, tooling required. Knowledge of FDA QSR's and ISO requirements preferred.
