About the role
Lead Data Science & Informatics Specialist
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary data science team, setting strategy and ensuring high-quality work.
- Oversee the design and deployment of advanced analytics, forecasting models, and machine learning tools.
- Guide the use of raw, structured, and unstructured data to inform public health decisions and resource allocation.
- Partner with program leaders, local health jurisdictions, tribal partners, and other state agencies to align analytics priorities and share insights.
- Ensure scientific rigor, transparency, and reproducibility in modeling and data use.
- Represent DOH in state and national forums, contributing expertise on data science and public health.
- Drive innovation while keeping equity, accountability, and clear communication at the center of all work.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of supervisory or lead experience overseeing technical staff or project teams.
- Proficiency in statistical programming and data science tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
- Experience working with structured and unstructured data and developing analytic models or visualization tools.
- Familiarity with data governance, quality assurance, and reproducibility practices.
- Experience with data visualization and reporting tools for communicating insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate technical information into plain language.
