About the role
Responsible for preparing and maintaining the surgical area. This position scrubs and acts as the first assistant to the physician during procedures. Additionally, this role assists the RN in technical functions related to patient care in the OR. In addition, this position helps in the training of others. Additionally, this role functions as a resource within the department. Ensures adherence to all relevant protocols and standards.
Responsibilities
- Positions patients for optimal surgical exposure while ensuring comfort and safety.
- Pads pressure points and guards against nerve damage to prevent injury.
- Prepares and maintains the surgical area, including scrubbing for procedures, setting up the operating room, and cleaning instruments and equipment post-procedure.
- Selects and applies appropriate wound dressings and secures drainage systems to tissue.
- Assists with closure of body planes using various suturing techniques and materials as directed by the surgeon.
- Participates in volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques as needed.
- Assists with hemostasis by clamping, cauterizing, tying, ligating vessels, and applying hemostatic agents.
- Provides visualization of the operative site through proper placement and securing of retractors, packing with sponges, and digital manipulation of tissue.
Requirements
- High School Grad or Equiv Required or
- Technical/Vocational School Required
- Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) Required and
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - Cert Required and
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) Required or
- Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) Required or
- ABSA Surgical Assistant (SA) Required.
