About the role

The Director, Risk Management and Insurance is based in Atlanta, Georgia and reports directly to the Senior Vice President & Treasurer within the Finance Division at Delta Air Lines. The position has two direct reports and a total team of ten (there are three insurance placement colleagues including the Director and seven aviation claims colleagues). The ideal candidate will have 15+ years of experience in risk management, insurance placement, and claims oversight with a strong casualty and property insurance background.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and collaborate with internal stakeholders – Security, Human Resources, Corporate Real Estate, Legal, Cash Management/Treasury, Environmental, Tech Ops, Financial Reporting, and Emergency Response Team
  • Lead the insurance team (colleagues, internal and external stakeholders) by keeping them informed/updated on events at Delta, aviation industry trends and operations
  • Manage external and insurance company actuaries, third-party administrators (TPAs), insurance brokers and external risk control engineers to evaluate Workers Compensation and Property loss results and manage the actuarial and Risk Control process
  • Overall responsibility for all lines of insurance for Delta Air Lines and its subsidiaries including Monroe Energy (oil refinery) including Aviation, Directors & Officers, Workers Compensation risk financing, Property/Cargo, etc.
  • Serve as leader for two captive insurance companies
  • Direct responsibility for the risk financing aspects of workers compensation (loss projections, reserves, collateral, etc.; however, the day-to-day claims management function resides within Human Resources)
  • Develop annual insurance budgets for Delta Air Lines and its subsidiaries
  • Select, evaluate, and manage all external insurance brokers and consultants with responsibility for performance and compensation
  • Participate in claims reviews with brokers and TPAs regarding claims arising from Owner Controlled Insurance Programs (OCIP) primarily for Workers Compensation and Liability lines of coverage as well as aviation claims reviews
  • Provide periodic updates to the Treasurer regarding significant claim matters

Requirements

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in risk management, insurance placement, and claims oversight
  • ARM (Associate in Risk Management) or CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) designation Required
  • Possess analytical skills to assess loss and financial data
  • Proven experience working with actuaries, insurance brokers, and attorneys
  • Ability to identify and assess the operational and financial risks of the company
  • Strong knowledge of casualty and property insurance placement, workers' compensation, and liability claims necessary
  • Aviation knowledge is a plus but not required
  • Experience as the senior leader on a corporate risk management team is preferred but not required
  • Consistently prioritizes safety and security of self, others, and personal data

  • Possesses a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency
  • Is at least 18 years of age and has authorization to work in the United States
