About the role
The Engineering Design Team Lead will oversee project design delivery from concept through completion, ensuring compliance with agency standards, specifications, and policies.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, documentation, and preparation of contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates for transportation projects.
- Manage project scope, schedule, and budget to ensure successful delivery of assigned highway design projects.
- Review engineering plans and specifications for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards and policies.
- Coordinate with specialty groups, survey teams, and environmental and right-of-way staff to gather data and verify commitments.
- Supervise and mentor a team of engineers and technicians, providing direction, feedback, and training to support staff development.
- Plan and assign work, monitor progress for timeliness and quality, and ensure adherence to safety policies and standards.
- Represent WSDOT in meetings and communications with internal teams, external agencies, and the public in a professional and ethical manner.
- Utilize WSDOT systems, reporting tools, and computer applications to track progress, manage documentation, and ensure compliance with agency procedures.
Requirements
- Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated experience applying engineering principles, methods, and practices to project management in transportation or construction environments.
- Project & Design Oversight: Ability to oversee and review engineering designs and documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance with standards, and constructability, while supervising the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Technical & Digital Proficiency: Advanced skills in operating Windows-based systems and engineering software, including MS Office Suite, MSTeams, computer-aided engineering applications, cloud-based platforms, and system databases for project tracking and information management.
- Communication Skills: Advanced skills in professional communication, specifically in communicating technical information effectively and professionally to a diverse audience, including those with non-technical backgrounds, virtually, by phone, and in person.
- Leadership & Supervision: Skills to lead and supervise a diverse workforce by fostering collaboration across boundaries, building and maintaining effective teams, coaching and mentoring staff, and encouraging engagement and professional growth.
