About the role

  • Ensure that protocol orders (e.g., for sepsis, trauma, stroke) are followed correctly.
  • Be present (or available) for codes (code blue, cardiac arrest), trauma activations, stroke alerts, etc.
  • Assist the ED team in resuscitations/emergencies, including making therapy recommendations under high stress/time pressure.
  • Reconcile patients’ home medications when they arrive in the ED.
  • Assist with ensuring safe transitions (discharge from ED, admission, transfer) so that medication regimens are continuous and safe.

  • Educate ED staff (physicians, nurses) about medication protocols, safety issues, new drugs.
  • Precept pharmacy students, residents; supervise pharmacy technicians or medication history personnel.

  • Be ready for situations where daytime tasks roll over; manage workload fluctuations (e.g., surges of trauma/cases during the night)
